Eminem Returns Triumphant And Fearless
- Posted on: Tuesday June 8, 2010 at 3:00 PM
What did you get up to on the weekend? See some friends? Go out on the town? A date maybe? That's nice... We ask because all our plans went out the window on Saturday when Eminem debuted the video for brand new single "Not Afraid".
We've been locked in the house hitting repeat and trying to dissect the guts and glory involved ever since. We have concluded that, as much as we have always adored Em's Slim Shady alter-ego, we like it even better when he keeps it so real it's raw.
And make no mistake, "Not Afraid" sounds and looks like someone coming back from the dead:
We think it might just be Mr Mathers' most powerful single since the Oscar-winning "Lose Yourself".
"Not Afraid" is taken from the much-anticipated Recovery album, which is out June 22 (through Aftermath Records) and we can only hope it all has the same air of focus, determination and empathy that its first single does. Sheer brilliance.
Haroshi and His Recycled Skateboard Art

Haroshi's "Screaming my hand, 2010"
Japanese artist Haroshi has found a unique medium - the thrashed and forgotten USED skateboard - which he used to pile up on the ceiling in his room. SO WHY NOT RECYCLE?
His process? He stacks multiple deck stocks into a wooden mosiac, then cuts, shaves and polishes them. The result? Jaw-dropping three-dimensional sculptures layered with vibrant color and energy.
Haroshi also hides a broken skateboard part within each sculpture (though the viewer is not able to see it); he says the part within is meant to "give soul".
Truly existential, right? Have a look at the pieces below:

"Screaming my foot, 2010" - which is part of a set of perfectly sculpted human appendages (similar to the hand above). The construction appears silky smooth and raw simultaneously, perhaps a metaphor for the human condition (or the soul).

Who can forget the classic face of Mario? Above and below, two pieces from Haroshi's "Mario Series, 2009", a new take on the iconic video game character. Who knew Mario was a thrasher???
What do you do with your broken skateboards?
