When you think of England, a few images probably spring to mind: Queen Elizabeth II strolling through the decadent halls of Buckingham Palace, protected by troops of straight-faced and impeccably-presented guards; the iconic facade of Big Ben and the Houses Of Parliament; imposing castles, atop green rolling hills...
It's an image a lot of Brits enjoying projecting. (Anyone who's seen flamboyant comedian Eddie Izzard's "Dressed To Kill" DVD may recall him joking: "We've got tons of history, lying about the place. Big old castles... And you all think that we live in castles. And we do all live in castles! We've got one each!")
Ex-Stone Roses legend Ian Brown, however, is on a mission in his latest video to give us an unflinching look at the grittier side of the UK. He took to the streets of his home-town, Manchester, in the North of England, for "Stellify".
Get ready for brick alleys, industrial wastelands next to council estates (they're the Brit equivalent of the projects), grey skies and a whole bunch of drizzle. Woo!
We bet the marching band and flag wavers cheered everyone up no end though. Thanks Ian!
"Stellify" is the first single to be taken from Mr Brown's sixth solo album - My Way - which was released in September (through Polydor Records in the UK, it's available on import here) and has been busying himself being as outspoken as ever in interviews. Last month, in Mojo Magazine, he called for British teachers to educate their students about Eminem, 50 Cent and Biggie Smalls as a means to inspire them.
With a successful musical career now spanning twenty years, we'd say Ian's pretty damn inspirational himself.
