Tigercity. Prrr...Sexy name, sexy music. we sat down with two members of the Brooklyn-based band in between a long soundcheck session this fall in NYC. Over German refreshments, tall, bearded lead singer Bill Gillim and lanky bassist Joel Ford talked about their upcoming album and new pimped out video filled with champagne popping, private planes, and Bentleys - and why it's oh so ironic.
What’s with your newest LP cover (Ancient Lover, out this fall)? Looks super exotic.
Joel: It was designed by one of our buds Cas.
JT.com: Where? Looks like Tahiti or something.
Bill: Ha, it was actually shot in a Beaver swamp in Vermont. That’s me on the cover.
Joel: Bill got covered in leeches in the shoot.
Bill: Ha, it definitely wasn’t glamorous. When I got out of there, I was covered all over in em. (laughing)

JT.com: How would you describe "Ancient Lover" compared to your EP “Pretend not to Love.”
Bill: It’s definitely darker….
Joel: I don’t know if I would use the word darker, but it’s got a “bigger sound” and a bigger range of production. It’s more dynamic, with tones of guitar and keyboards.
Bill: When making the album, we weren’t listening to indie rock. We were listening to bands like Chic, MJ, Prince, Daft Punk.
JT.com: Can you describe the video for your single, "Fake Gold"?
Bill: It's pretty extreme. We are on a private plane drinking champagne. Cas is drinking as a pilot.
Joel: And Bill is on the beach. And with this Bentley.
JT.com: Sounds pretty pimp. What is it meant to signify?
Bill: If you are in a band, you want to live a fantasy band life. You'd be surprised how most people think we are in a band and we live this crazy life. But it's not like that. Even my friends are like “Are you on a tour bus?” and I’m like "No, I need you to buy me dinner."
Joel: So basically it’s our fantasy world video.
Bill: Also, if you take the 70s bands like Chic- they were so stylish. So we wanted to capture some of that as well.

“It is odd, I normally never listen to this kind of music, but I am enjoying this song. Might just have to go check out their other stuff on YouTube. Thanks for sharing!”
