Everyone is getting excited for the Winter Olympics, (starting Feb 12th in Vancouver), including evidently the NY Times.
Proof?
They enlisted uber-"it boy" photographer Ryan McGinley to shoot portraits of the US competitors. But don't expect well-oiled Sports Illustrated snaps from McGinley. Instead, the brooding fella has crafted a pastel-hued pastiche of the athletes suspended delicately and deliberately in mid-flight - displaying the artistry and incredulity of these snow/ice-bound talents. A skiier hangs mid-air like a cherry-blossom in cotton candy-tinted snow. Figureskaters form sunny, sun-drenched silhouette on ice. A snowboarder looks angelic in the middle of a snowstorm - as though surrounded by feathers instead of snow flakes. In other words, McGinley has made summer out of winter - and the overall effect is delightful.
