What to do with your old vinyls? If you are French artist Mr. Brainwash, you smash em and turn them into collages of famous icons (that sell for $300,000+ a pop.) After all, he is the guy who painted Obama in superman suit on walls in all major cities and is rumored to be buddies with the elusive UK street artist Banksy...And as you can tell from the picture above, he's not shy.
Here's a behind-the-scenes scoop with the gutsy artist in his immense NY exhibit, Icons as he breaks records:
P.S. Mr Brainwash's exhibit, called "Icons," is only around till March 31st so if you are in NYC, it's worth the walk to 415 W. 13th street to see it. Why? It's (thankfully) the first art exhibit in the recession that doesn't remind us we are in a recession. He has filled an 15,000 square foot space in NYC's Meat Packing District so big, bright, and in-your-face that it feels like the art world's Disneyland - complete with mammoth portraits of Angelina Jolie outfitted like Marilyn Monroe, Trojan horse-like statues made out of black tires, and a full-sized taxi wrapped up like a Toys R Us trinket.

“ Mr. Brainwash stole the methods of Banksy, Shep Fairey and others by following them around for years under the pretense he was making a movie. He took their formula and made himself famous from it. The fact that his art is getting so much praise seems undeserved and fake considering he's just mimicking the methods of seasoned, creative, authentic street artists. ”
