1) What’s your all-time favorite course/hole and why?
You ask golfers which holes they love and they say their favorite hole is the one they eagled. They remember the one they played really well. I’ll say the 13th hole at Augusta because I eagled it and also because it’s Augusta and sacred ground. I also love my new course Mirimichi. I really do. I love it for so many reasons. I feel like we did something great for the community. And we ended up doing something great for the world—a lot of people will pay attention to how eco-friendly this establishment is and I hope it will make some waves.
2) Who is in your dream foursome and why?
Bobby Jones because he never took a dollar for the game and always loved the purity of the game. Tiger Woods because he’s without a doubt the best golfer of all time. And has taken every dollar for the game! And my dad because he taught me how to play. He’s my favorite person to play golf with.
3) What’s the strongest part of your game?
I would say my stronger parts are wedge play and chipping.
4) What’s the weakest part of your game?
My long irons and I don’t know. Ever since I got lessons from the right type of people, my game is starting to come together. I definitely hit the ball a decent distance. Every pro says every tournament boils down to a putting contest. You have to be a good putter to be a good golfer.
5) Ever hit a hole in one?
I have not. I came under an inch! Can you believe that? It was in Destin, Florida.
6) If you could play in just one of the four major championships, which would it be?
The Masters. It just seems like the most prestigious, the most sought after… and the green jacket! But it’s a toss-up between that and the British Open. Going back to Scotland, Ireland, England, and the birth of the sport.
7) You’re sporting a lot of Callaway on the course: what do you like about their gear?
I definitely play Callaway clubs. Their equipment has gone up in performance tremendously over the last couple of years. But also they are a really progressive brand as far as the sport goes. I appreciate that. Times change and the sport has to move forward and if you’re not trying to gain a new audience, than what are you doing? I applaud them doing that while holding on to the value of the game.
8) Your charity tourney last year was a big success. What can your fans look forward to this year?
A lot of the same! It’s just a fun week—Vegas, golf, entertainment, parties, good food, great weather, and a great charity. They do so much work for children who otherwise wouldn’t get any medical treatment. [Shriners Hospital for Children Open is held each October in Vegas.]
9) Your new course Mirimichi opens in July. What are you most excited about?
I’m excited about every aspect of the course. We basically created a whole new course. It’s a completely different track and doesn’t look anything like what it did. It’s exciting. There’s literally a creek around the whole course. We’ve dug 7 new lakes—the construction we’ve done lengthened the course by almost 1000 yards. We’ll have a great first tee program for kids and families. We’ll have a 9-hole executive course, but it’s really to use for the first tee program out there. We’ll have junior tournaments to get more young people into the game. I like the values the game teaches like honesty, patience, focus, and tenacity. Also, it’s close to my house. And my parents had their wedding reception there.
