A few weeks ago, Justin sat down to talk about the current state of music and where he thinks it’s heading in the future. Here’s what he had to say:
On the current state of music:
“Now more than ever, I think music is like the wild wild west. There’s no rhyme or reason why anything works. You hear T.I., Lady Gaga, Scissor Sisters, and Gym Class Heroes all on the same station—which is cool.
“I’m noticing rhythmic/urban stations playing a lot more dance music. And there’s the resurgence of rock and roll. I said that to myself before my last album, let’s take dance music and apply it to rock and roll. Everybody’s definitely latched onto the attitude of rock and roll—but, if it’s inauthentic, give it a shelf life of 18 months – it’ll get in and get out. Everything else will stick around. What do I know though?“
The future of music:
“I do think now more than ever it’s about instincts. If you have a voice and people are listening to you… And I applaud South by Southwest. That festival is dope. It’s great because they want new, specifically unsigned artists.
“No matter how good or terrible music is to you, it still makes the world go round. It affects everything.”

“I completely agree about SXSW. We have one in Portland, OR too where I live called NXNW. Maybe you saw Starfucker while you were at SXSW? They are amazing Justin. Check out their self titled album! If you decide you want to collaborate with them...let me know. Josh and Ryan are friends of mine. Keep supporting the indie music....it is the future! Love you Justin. xoxo Amy”
