British Open 2010: John Daly Came to Play
The British Open started early Thursday at St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf. Standing among golf luminaries at the British Open champions dinner, including Lee Trevino, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods, it was John Daly's star that shone brightest, so to speak. Daly won this tournament in 1995, and it seems the blue-collar kid with the long drive is back and he came to play.
After Round 1, Daly is in the clubhouse, tied for third with an impressive -6.
Can we all take a minute and give it up for the governing body of the Open Championship, the Royal and Ancient, who seem to be letting their hair down a little bit. Sergio Garcia will play the tournament sporting his nation's football jersey to honor their World Cup triumph.
"It would be churlish to object, wouldn't it, given their great win. I personally have no objections to it whatsoever," the R&A's chief executive Peter Dawson told a news conference Wednesday.

As for Daly's technicolor dreamcoat? "I was sitting opposite him at dinner, so I had it all night, and my eyesight survived," Dawson quipped. Survived? We should all be so lucky, we say.
