An Instant Vacation: The Film 180 Degrees South

Ever had one of those days where you are sitting innocent in your cubicle and the guy next to you sneezes....and something about that trivial human occurrence infuriates you and instantly your mind channels this fantasy: you hand in your badge, give your boss the finger, buy the cheapest truck you can find, wave goodbye to mom, head down as south as far as you can go and climb some big-ass mountain?

OK, so maybe that's just a low-budget sequel to Office Space waiting to happen but you get the point. For any of you who live with wanderlust, the adventure bug, or have climbed a mountain (even a little one) and survived, you'll leave the theater of the film 180 Degrees South feeling decidedly inspired. (Not to mention, for any of you conservationist neophytes didn't turn off the lights to conserve energy or compost before the film, you may just find yourself doing so afterward.)

Why? The film is based on the story of this tall, lanky, California surfer kid, (i.e. Jeff Johnson - no relation to Jack Johnson that we know of....), who in 2008 attempts to re-enact the 1968 adventure of Patagonia and The Northface's founders, Yvon Choinard and Doug Tompkins: traveling to the southernmost tip of the continent (i.e. Patagonia) and climbing Mount Fitz Roy. In his boy-turns-man journey, his ship's mast splits into two forcing the ship to divert course to the remote island of Rapa Nui, Easter Island, where he picks up a surfer babe on shore and they ride some rad pipes at sunset next to the requisite dolphins and turtles...In other words, it blows The Little Mermaid and White Squall out of the water (lame pun intended) and that's even before the climbing part of the movie - where he and his comedic sidekicks try to scale the 94-degree mountain top, sans snow, while Choinard and Tompkins remain on ground, making quote-worthy quips, drinking matte.
